What is resilience?

Resilience is the capacity to prepare for, recover from and adapt in the face of stress, adversity, trauma or challenge.

What is stress?

A maladaptive behavioral response to perceived threat or danger that has no functional outcome, i.e. it does not enhance survival, minimize distress or result in optimal health, growth and restoration.

How Do You Build Resilience?

Modern life frequently results in the development of unbalanced lifestyle habits which deplete our energy, disrupt the function of our nervous systems and create unhealthy breathing habits. These in turn decrease our resilience and result in more stress in our lives. Resilience can be restored and maintained by living a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. This webinar will provide you with practical information and useful tools you can use to begin to restore balance in your life and rebuild your energy and vitality, i.e., your resilience.

In this single session, three-hour webinar, you will learn:
  • The various parts of your nervous system and how they work together to promote ease or disease.
  • How the function of your nervous system plays a key role in how you perceive your inner and outer environments and in your biological and behavioral responses to what you perceive.
  • The three major biobehavioral response systems and how they function in daily life in adaptive and maladaptive ways to either enhance or deplete resilience.
  • Why relaxation and healthy breathing are so important in building and maintaining resilience.
  • How unhealthy breathing habits occur and how to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy breathing.
  • Yogic breathing and relaxation practices to restore resilience and improve overall wellbeing.
Useful Information

To participate in the practicum part of the webinar, you need to have a place in which you can lie down comfortably and sit comfortably either in a chair or on the floor. Having a yoga mat, blankets, pillows or bolsters as aids to practice are very helpful. It would also be helpful to have something you can place over your abdomen for a specific breath training practice. This could be a bag of rice or beans, a sandbag, or some other soft object weighing between 3 and 10 pounds.
