Overview

This off-grid practice immersion invites you into a sustainable exploration of pranic awareness through yoga, breathwork, and meditation supported by nature, simple living, and intentional community. Across several days of guided practice, reflection, and restorative rest, participants are invited to refine their relationship with breath, cultivate internal sensitivity, and experience how prana moves through our body, mind, and environment.

The program emphasizes slow, breath-connected movement, simple pranayama, and inward-turning meditation practices that support clarity, steadiness, and deep renewal. Time is intentionally structured to allow practices to settle—without rushing, multitasking, or external distraction—creating the conditions for insight and integration.

Set within the quiet forests of western Maine, the retreat unfolds in an off-grid, solar-powered environment that naturally supports nervous system downshifting and embodied presence. Away from habitual pace and digital noise, the land, the practices, and the rhythm of the days work together to support a grounded, restorative immersion.

Key Highlights

Breath-Connected Movement & Cultivating Inner Stillness

Across a progression of thoughtfully guided classes, we will explore yoga and meditation as tools for cultivating pranic awareness, expansion, and concentration. Each day begins with gentle, breath-connected movement designed to reset optimal diaphragmatic breathing while awakening energetic sensitivity in the body. Asana practices are slow and accessible, intentionally inviting you to feel how breath moves through form, and how prana flows when effort softens into awareness.

Pranayama & Pranic Expansion

Through guided pranayama and breath training tools, we will explore how to refine pranic awareness, expand pranic capacity, and direct that experience inward to help restore balance, clarity, and vitality — offering a powerful reset that extends well beyond the retreat.

Vishoka Meditation — Resting the Mind Inward

Daily sessions of Vishoka Meditation offer a precise set of meditative techniques designed to unite mind and breath and turn them inward, allowing us to nourish and rejuvenate ourselves on every level of our being.

Uplifting Community & Immersion in Nature

Community is an essential part of this retreat experience. Shared practices, nourishing meals, reflection circles, and unstructured time invite authentic connection — with yourself, one another, and the natural world that surrounds us.

Between sessions, you’re encouraged to wander private forest trails, sit by the spring-fed mountain brook, or simply rest in silence beneath towering trees. Nature becomes both container and teacher, reinforcing the pranic principles explored on the mat and cushion.

What’s Included:
  • 2 Himalayan Institute trip leaders and faculty members
  • 11 freshly prepared vegetarian meals
  • Pre-departure preparation Zoom call
  • 10 or more guided practice sessions
  • A 60 minute sauna session

People seeking both a powerful and nurturing reset. If you value being in nature, a supportive community, and have backgrounds with yoga, meditation, and/or pranayama, this retreat is perfect for you!

Nurture Through Nature offers peaceful on-campus hiking trails that wind through quiet forests and gentle terrain, providing easy access to nature right from the retreat grounds. The trails are well-marked and ideal for mindful walks, light hiking, or quiet time outdoors, inviting guests to slow down and connect with the surrounding Maine landscape.

Nature Through Nurture is set in the Lakes and Mountains region of Western Maine. It’s fully wooded with a beautiful brook that flows through the property. Most of the walking paths include a combination of mixed gravel, dirt paths, and roots. The property is set on a hillside, which includes several hundred feet of elevation change.

People should be in overall good health—capable of walking up and down hills, across slightly uneven terrain, and able to participate in yoga, meditation, and pranayama practices.

Comfortable walking shoes, along with a pair of indoor shoes or slippers that can be easily carried from your yurt or cabin to the main lodge, where dining and practice sessions take place. Additionally, please bring flip-flops or shower shoes for use in the centralized shower facilities.

In September, western Maine typically has mild days and cool mornings and evenings, with daytime temperatures in the 60s to low 70s°F and cooler conditions at night. Guests should plan to dress in layers, including warm options for early mornings and evenings, breathable clothing for daytime activities, rain gear, and sturdy footwear for hiking and outdoor time. For indoor yoga practice in the main lodge, comfortable, flexible clothing is recommended, along with an extra layer to stay warm during slower or restorative portions of practice.

A cornerstone of this program is the shared group experience—practicing together, sharing meals, participating in activities, and (for many participants) sharing accommodations. Learning in a community can be deeply enriching. It invites us to expand our boundaries, step outside our comfort zones, and put our practice into action in real time with one another. Because we’re sharing space so closely, we ask all participants to come with a welcoming spirit.

Himalayan Institute’s online platform, HI Online, is the perfect place to familiarize yourself with our organization’s approach to yoga and wellness. For meditation specifically, we’ll practice the system of Vishoka Meditation. To develop a relationship with this practice before our retreat consider ordering the Vishoka Meditation book.

While our ethos is to disconnect from the pressures of our day to day lives, we understand that reality often requires cell phone service and wifi. Cell service may be available at the top of the property and wifi is available at the main lodge. If you need to make a call, please be respectful of the people hoping to disconnect from the grid.

We do not provide linens. Beds will have a fitted sheet on them. Please bring warm sleeping bags (rated 30-45 degrees), blankets, towels and whatever else you need to be comfortable!

Our cabins are heated by a wood stove. We will set the stove up for you before you arrive but it is your responsibility to keep the fire going while you are there. Firewood will be available near your cabin/yurt for your use along with newspaper, matches, and kindling.

There is no running water in the cabins or yurts, however, there is an ample supply available in glass containers in your cabin. You have access to refill the water jugs on your own as needed.

The water provided is pure mountain well water from a drilled well on the property sourced through the granite subsurface 80’ down. Please note, we are a Plastic Water Bottle Free Campus. We ask that you do not bring cases of bottled drinking water to our retreat center.

If you are joining us for a sauna, there will be both drinking water and rinsing water for your use waiting for you in the sauna changing room.

We have a hybrid hot water system for year-round hot showers in our specially designed Pioneer shower room, just a short walk from your cabin or yurt.

You can enjoy our outdoor hot showers open April through October. We also offer a lovely outdoor shower at air temperature (outdoor showers are closed during the winter). Our spring fed mountain brook offers many massaging whirlpools, dipping pools, and granite sleuths to rinse in.

Both trip leaders are Wilderness First Responder (WFR)–certified. While we of course hope there are no emergencies, the retreat center is approximately 15 minutes from Bridgton Hospital, located at 10 Hospital Drive, Bridgton, ME 04009.

In the event that 911 services are required, please either proceed to the parking lot or clearly inform the 911 dispatcher which building you are in. Be sure to note that the access road is not plowed. Local 911 dispatchers are familiar with the exact location of all buildings on the property.
