Key Highlights

Yoga

Each morning begins with a grounding yoga practice designed to gently awaken the body and focus the mind in preparation for the day’s hike. These mindful sessions set a steady, intentional tone that carries onto the trail. In the evenings, gentle restorative movement helps release physical tension and energetically integrate the day’s experiences. Each practice concludes with a guided meditation, inviting deeper inner awareness and a sense of calm before rest. Yoga sequences are intentionally crafted to be accessible for all levels and support a wide range of yoga experience.

Hiking

This retreat features a scenic hut-to-hut journey through the heart of the White Mountains, traveling from the AMC Highland Center to Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut. The route showcases the diversity and character of the range—from shaded forest climbs and moss-lined streams to open ridgeline walking and waterfall-lined descents. The itinerary unfolds progressively, beginning with a steady ascent on Day Two, moving into higher-elevation terrain along the Twinway, and concluding with a long, gentle descent through Zealand Valley. Each day offers a balance of challenge and reward, with ample time to pause, take in views, and move with awareness through a true wilderness setting.

Hut-To-Hut

Hut-to-hut hiking is a style of multi-day trekking that allows you to travel through mountainous terrain while staying in backcountry huts rather than carrying a full backpacking load. Each day, you hike from one hut to the next, arriving in the afternoon to a prepared meal, a warm place to sleep, and a welcoming communal atmosphere.

Unlike traditional backpacking, hut-to-hut hiking eliminates the need to carry tents, sleeping pads, cooking gear, or multiple days of food. Your pack is lighter, your focus is clearer, and your energy can be directed toward the experience of the trail itself—your breath, your body, and the landscape around you.

The AMC huts are an iconic part of White Mountains culture, offering simple but comfortable accommodations, hearty vegetarian meals, and a shared dining experience that naturally fosters connection. Evenings are spent resting, stretching, sharing stories, and settling into the quiet rhythms of mountain life, while nights bring deep rest after full days of purposeful movement.

Community

The retreat experience is shaped as much by the people as by the landscape, with connection unfolding naturally as the group moves through the mountains together. Shared miles on the trail, moments of effort and ease, and arrivals at huts or scenic viewpoints become collective experiences that foster trust, encouragement, and a quiet sense of belonging. Conversations arise easily while hiking side by side, balanced by stretches of silence that feel just as meaningful. Evenings bring the group together in a relaxed, welcoming rhythm—stretching and breathing in yoga practice, sharing stories and laughter, and gathering around communal tables for nourishing meals. Through mutual support, shared presence, and care for one another, a strong group energy emerges, often carrying forward as lasting friendships and a feeling of connection that remains long after the journey through the mountains has ended.

Frequently Asked Questions

General

This excursion takes place in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and follows the classic AMC hut-to-hut route, beginning at the AMC Highland Center and continuing on to Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut. Designed as a community-oriented yoga and hiking immersion, the experience blends challenging hikes suited for avid hikers and athletes with grounding yoga, meditation, and breath-connected movement to cultivate inner pranic awareness and develop a sense of stillness. The physical rigor of the trails is intentionally balanced with mindful movement and contemplative practices, creating space for restoration, connection, and reflection while living simply in AMC’s iconic mountain huts.

The hikes are generally rated as difficult with some moderate sections. A high degree of physical fitness and/or thorough preparation is required to have an enjoyable experience on this excursion. There will be a mix of hiking and some bouldering (rock scrambling) on most hikes, with altitude gains and losses of over 2,000 feet.

After arriving at the AMC Highland Center and spending a night settling in, we will begin a three-day hut-to-hut hiking journey through New Hampshire’s White Mountains. We will be shuttled to the Gale River Trailhead, where our hut-to-hut journey begins. From there, we will hike to Galehead Hut for our first overnight, continue on to Zealand Falls Hut for our second night, and then return via the A–Z Trail back to our starting point at the AMC Highland Center. This progressive route links iconic AMC huts and allows us to travel lightly while fully experiencing the terrain, rhythm, and community that define the White Mountains’ hut-to-hut tradition.

We’ll hike 5-8 miles on hiking days.

The trails vary from packed dirt with roots, to rocks and boulders. Some sections will be steep and require hands and feet to traverse. Hiking shoes with good foot support and waterproofing are recommended.

Your safety is our top priority—Both trip leaders are certified mountain guides and Wilderness First Responders. We carry satellite communication devices, first aid kits, and emergency provisions at all times in the backcountry, and clear plans are in place to manage medical issues or emergencies, including coordination with local emergency services if needed.

The weather can be in the low 80’s during the day and low 40’s at night, or anywhere in between. Packing layers will be important. Rain is always possible, so having a good raincoat at minimum is encouraged.

The highest point on the main hut-to-hut route between Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut is near the summit of South Twin Mountain (over 4,500 ft ), which the Twinway/AT crosses shortly after leaving Galehead Hut. This ridge section is higher than either hut (Galehead ~3,775 ft, Zealand Falls ~2,635 ft) and serves as the high point of the traverse between them.

The excursion will begin and end at the AMC Highland Center, located at 3757 US-302, Bretton Woods, NH 03575. Please plan to arrive by 3:00 PM, at which time we will settle into the Shapleigh Bunkhouse and begin orientation, introductions, and our first guided practice. Departure is scheduled for no earlier than 2:00 PM on September 16, 2026.

The AMC Highland Center at Crawford Notch is located within the White Mountain National Forest at U.S. Route 302, Bretton Woods, NH 03575. Free parking is available on site. Our team will coordinate group vehicles to park together in a designated area of the lot to help consolidate space. For those traveling from out of state, the closest major airport is Portland International Jetport (PWM), which offers multiple car rental options upon arrival.

The best way to prepare physically for any hiking trip of this nature is by more hiking. We recommend going on extended hikes leading up to the excursion, wearing a backpack with at least 15-20lbs in it. Ideally, you would also hike where there is undulating terrain and some extended inclines. Squats are also a great way to train the legs for the load bearing that will be required for going up and down the steep White Mountains. Additionally, we recommend breath training practices such as sandbag breathing, crocodile, bhastrika, kapalabati, agni sara, and nadi shodanam, which can be found by visiting HI Online.

Accommodations & Meals

Nestled in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the AMC Highland Center at Crawford Notch offers a welcoming gateway to one of the Northeast’s most iconic mountain landscapes. Easily accessible, the Highland Center is within driving distance of Boston, Portland, Montreal, Burlington, and much of New England.

Set within the White Mountain National Forest, this region is defined by rugged peaks, deep forests, and historic mountain passes. Our experience begins at the Highland Center, where we’ll enjoy comfortable group accommodations, indoor practice and gathering spaces, and freshly prepared meals in a warm, community-oriented setting.

As we venture deeper into the backcountry, we’ll spend nights at two classic Appalachian Mountain Club high huts—Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut. These remote, caretaker-staffed mountain huts provide a rare opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the alpine environment. Evenings at the huts offer shared meals, spectacular mountain scenery, and time to unwind after a full day on the trail, fostering connection with both the landscape and fellow participants.

Together, the combination of frontcountry comfort and backcountry hut stays creates a balanced and memorable White Mountains experience—grounded in community, simplicity, and a deep sense of place.

Meals throughout the trip are thoughtfully prepared and designed to support active days in the mountains. Vegetarian options will be provided at all locations.

At the AMC Highland Center, meals are served buffet-style, offering a variety of hearty, well-balanced options for breakfast and dinner.

While staying at Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut, breakfast and dinner are served family-style, a traditional AMC hut experience that brings the group together around shared meals after time on the trail.

All lunches during the trip will be packed trail lunches, prepared in advance and carried with you for the day’s hike.

Please note that menus may vary by location and season, but all meals are designed to be nourishing, satisfying, and appropriate for backcountry travel.

At the AMC Highland Center Shapleigh Bunkhouse, linens and bedding are provided. Pillows are typically available at the Highland Center At Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut, bunks are equipped with a mattress only. Pillows are not always available, so it is strongly recommended that you bring your own camping pillow for the duration of the trip. Guests are required to bring their own sleeping bag for hut stays. For September conditions in the White Mountains, we recommend a sleeping bag rated between 30°F and 45°F, as nighttime temperatures can be cool, especially at higher elevations. A lightweight sleeping bag liner is optional and can provide added warmth and comfort.

Bathroom and shower facilities vary by location and reflect the transition from frontcountry comfort to a more traditional backcountry hut experience. At the AMC Highland Center Shapleigh Bunkhouse, there are two full bathrooms with showers, which our group will share during the first night of the excursion. At Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut, facilities are backcountry-style. Each hut has composting toilets or outhouses located near the hut, but no showers are available. Running water may be limited and is typically used for cooking and dishwashing rather than personal bathing. We recommend planning accordingly for hut nights by bringing personal hygiene items such as biodegradable wipes, a small towel, and toiletries suitable for backcountry conditions.

Laundry facilities are available at the AMC Highland Center Shapleigh Bunkhouse; however, since we will only be staying there for the first night of the excursion, using laundry services will likely not be practical given our limited time at this location.

At Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut, there are no laundry facilities available. Once we enter the backcountry, participants should plan to manage their clothing for the remainder of the trip.

We recommend packing quick-drying, moisture-wicking clothing and planning accordingly for multiple days on the trail.

Practicalities

Our group size will be capped at 14 participants.

Connectivity will vary throughout the trip and will be limited once we enter the backcountry. At the AMC Highland Center Shapleigh Bunkhouse, Wi-Fi is available in common areas, and cell service is generally reliable, though coverage may vary by carrier. At Galehead Hut and Zealand Falls Hut, cell service is extremely limited or unavailable, and Wi-Fi is not provided. These huts are located in remote backcountry settings, and participants should plan to be largely offline during hut stays. We recommend notifying family, friends, or workplaces in advance that communication may be intermittent during the trip.

Register online or download and mail the Tour Participant Agreement with your deposit or full payment.

Requests for cancellation must be made in writing to the Tour Organizer. See the Tour Participant Agreement for complete terms and conditions and applicable cancellation charges. As a nonprofit, we are unable to offer exceptions to our cancellation policy — we therefore highly encourage participants to purchase trip cancellation insurance in the event you need to cancel your reservation for any reason.
