Vishoka Meditation Level Two: Meditation on the Lotus of the Heart

Recorded live in Honesdale from July—November of 2023

Vishoka Meditation: Meditation on the Lotus of the Heart, represents the advanced stage of the practice of Vishoka Meditation. It is the finest distillation of the Yoga Sutra, Shiva Sutra, and Lotus Sutra (Sad-dharma-pundarika Sutra). This online course is designed to take us to the pinnacle of meditative experience. In terms of both theory and practice, it pulls together the core principles and experiences of raja yoga, mantra yoga, kundalini yoga, meditative paradigms associated with yantra, mandala, chakra, pranayama, and a broad range of visualization techniques. Originally taught by Kapila and Buddha, this system of meditation has been nurtured by the siddha masters of the Sri Vidya tradition who are the backbone of the Himalayan Tradition.

This advanced online course has a firm pre-requisite of the Vishoka Meditation Course (Level 1) and the Vishoka Meditation Self-Mastery Series (Units 1, 2, and 3). It is organized in three parts, which build progressively, skillfully interweaving theory and practice across several months so you can systematically experience and assimilate this profound wisdom.

Part 1 of this course comprehensively shares the practice of Vishoka Meditation Level 2, covering both theory and several advanced practices which culminate in Meditation on the Lotus of the Heart. Part 2 and Part 3 are designed to refine and assimilate what we have experienced in Part 1. This portion of the course is for fortifying our practice with wisdom and compassion and integrating the power of mantra, thus entering the heart and the soul of the millennia-old tradition of yoga and Sri Vidya. It is a step toward finding and nurturing our inner bodhisattva, who one day can guide our study and practice while sitting at the feet of Buddha himself.

Part 1 – Mastering the Practice

The first part of this course combines study and practice intensives, so we are comprehensively prepared to practice meditation on the lotus of the heart. We begin by exploring the philosophical underpinnings of the practice, and then apply this wisdom as we experience Vishoka Meditation: Meditation on the Lotus of the Heart.

Key topics include:
  • How both the neo- and paleo-brain—that serve as the hardware of the mind—process, store, and magnify our joy and sorrow; how this processing, storing, and magnifying relates to the yogic idea of the psychoenergetic cycle known as vritti samskara chakra; and how the advanced practice of Vishoka Meditation can attenuate, halt, or change the direction of this cycle.
  • A detailed yogic understanding of our subtle body, kundalini shakti, prana shakti, nadis (energy channels), and prominent chakras with special attention to the ajna chakra and the lotus of the heart, along with their psycho-neurological correlates.
  • A comprehensive study on the lotus of the heart as elaborated in Yoga Sutra 3:34, with backward and forward reference to Yoga Sutra 3:26 and 3:38. This is where we delve into the profound wisdom and experience of the Sri Vidya tradition of tantra locked in mantra 38 of the SaundaryalahariThe Wave of Beauty and Bliss.
Key practices include:
  • Intensifying our Vishoka experience at the ajna chakra; expanding it simultaneously upward and downward to bring the entire space between the fontanelle and the bottom of the sternum into its fold; and deploying the Vishoka-born luminosity to various parts of the body.
  • The practice of prapancha vyapti and revelation of pranava
  • The technique of pracchardana vidharana pranayama, and its subtler alternative, the advanced version of nadi shodhanam taught only in the context of meditation on the lotus of the heart.
  • Pranava anusandhana, an advanced practice for internally sensing the sacred sound Om, and tracing its reverberation on the major neural pathways.
  • The application of the internally revealed sacred sound pranava for reaching the pinnacle of Vishoka Meditation, and higher stages of yoga nidra.
  • Integrating the theory and practices noted above in the complete practice of Vishoka Meditation Level 2–Meditation on the Lotus of the Heart

Part 2 – Fortifying the Practice with Wisdom & Compassion

In the second part of this course, we delve into the deeper causes of vishoka and shoka, joy and sorrow, sense of safety and fear, feelings of elation and grief, inner stability and scatteredness. Drawing upon the first nineteen sutras of the second chapter of the Yoga Sutra, we’ll survey the landscape of our mind, deeper sources of our afflicting and liberating thoughts, and the role of the three-pronged approach of Yoga Sutra 2:1 for clearing our mind and fortifying our practice with wisdom and compassion. This part of the course is like erecting a fence around our practice, protecting it from both predictable and unpredictable intruders.

Part 3 – Integrating the Power of Mantra

In the third and final part of this course, we’ll delve into the deeper aspects of philosophy and metaphysics related to mantra, yantra, mandala, and chakra, with a special focus on the revelation unique to the heart chakra. We’ll identify the position of the seers of mantras, and their role in facilitating our mantra sadhana, ensuring we remain connected to the source. We’ll also study the potential contaminants to mantra vidya and mantra sadhana, and preemptively execute a plan to prevent contaminants from entering the mantric stream for one’s own sake, and for the sake of other aspirants. Finally, we’ll focus on planting the most appropriate mantra into the highly fecund space of the lotus of the heart to gain the most immersive and spiritually rewarding experience Vishoka Meditation has to offer.
