Welcome

Grounded in the key tantric principle that the intensity and power of practice accelerates when intentionally aligned with the forces of time and place, an immersive experience at HI Prayagraj promises to elevate your yogic journey to entirely new heights.
Specifically designed to facilitate powerful group practices, and further potentized by decades of practice centered around Rudra Yaga—a practice for inner and outer healing—our campus in Prayagraj, India, has emerged as an exceptional sacred space. It reflects the Institute’s deep commitment to honoring and fortifying the legacy of yajna (group practice) which has been a pillar of the Himalayan Tradition for thousands of years.
Take part in one of our rare Himalayan Institute-led group practices held at HI Prayagraj, and be effortlessly immersed in the vibrant pulsation of the oft-imperceptible Sacred that so strongly reverberates throughout this incredibly mystical and spiritually charged space.
History
Host to the world-renowned Kumbha Mela and home to the sages of the Himalayan Tradition for millenia, Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) and the surrounding vicinity is known as Tirtha Raja, “lord of shrines.”

The Kumbha Mela, a highly significant spiritual gathering, takes place in alignment with an extraordinary celestial configuration that occurs just once every 12 years. Awakening and magnifying the transformative power of the Triveni Sangam—the confluence of three sacred rivers: the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati—this phenomenon is considered a profoundly auspicious time. It symbolizes kumbha, the vessel of immortal elixir, and is believed to be a time when spiritual practices bear fruit a thousandfold.
Time spent in and around Prayagraj is further enhanced by its proximity to the sacred city of Varanasi, where a visit to the iconic Ganga bathing ghats, the Vishvanath corridor, and evening aarti (ceremony of lights) right on the Ganga is easily within reach. Prominent as well as lesser-known shrines of Varanasi, include Vishwanath, Annapurna, Vishalakshi (Sri Vidya), Kal Bhairava, and more.
Campus & Grounds
The Himalayan Institute’s campus in Prayagraj was initially established in the year 2000. With over 500 participants in attendance, it was officially inaugurated with a 21-day Rudra Yaga practice during the 2001 Maha Kumbha Mela. Exponentially more rare than the Kumbha Mela occurring every 12 years, a Maha Kumbha Mela takes place only once every 144 years!

The spiritual heart of the campus, the Sacred Grove, overlooks the Ganga and is home to the havan kund (ceremonial fire pit) where our group practices such as Rudra Yaga take place under the careful guidance of Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, PhD, Spiritual Head of the Himalayan Institute.
Beautifully landscaped with gardens and thousands of trees, including a multitude of tree-lined, hand-laid brick walking paths, our 30-acre campus is an oasis of natural beauty and spiritual vibrancy. Situated directly on the bank of the mighty Ganges river—a living shrine in itself—and just a mile downstream from the Triveni Sangam, vibrant epicenter of the Kumbha Mela, HI Prayagraj offers the perfect blend of accessibility and tranquility. It is close enough to feel and partake in the robust throng of activity uniquely characteristic of the Kumbha Mela, yet aptly distanced from the dense crowds of millions of pilgrims. The campus’s ideal location provides a truly unique haven for participants to fully immerse themselves in the richest aspects of culture, sangha, practice and reflection, and to assimilate their experiences.

Pay close attention while participating in one of our rare group practices held at HI Prayagraj, and experience the subtle grace of walking in the actual footsteps of all those who’ve come before you: adepts and sages of the Himalayan Tradition as well as millions of spiritual pilgrims from all walks of life.
